The story of Gemelli begins in Abruzzo, Italy, the region that the Carney family hails from. With its unique geography, this region is nestled between the mountains and the sea, making its food particularly diverse and recognisable. It is no surprise that the Carney brothers: Alec, James and Paul, dreamed of opening an authentic Italian restaurant with their love for food rooted in a rich culinary tradition. Today, they are the proprietors of one of the most iconic James Street restaurants; the aptly named Gemelli.
The Gemelli Journey
The Carney brothers grew up in Griffith, New South Wales, a thriving agricultural community of Italian immigrants where the kitchen is the very heart of every home. The boys spent much of their time in the kitchen, surrounded by passionate cooks, developing a love for good ingredients and soulful cooking.
Their passion led them to open Gemelli, a famous restaurant known for authentic, modern Italian food that hasn’t forgotten its rustic roots. Gemelli was an ambitious venture that required years of hard work, patience and innovation. Their work paid off, with Gemelli becoming the only truly authentic Italian spot amongst other popular Broadbeach restaurants.
Authentic Italian Fortitude Valley and Nobbys Beach Restaurant
Two years after they opened Gemelli, the Carney brothers opened Gemellini in Nobbys Beach and another trendy spot called Roy’s, a location they knew as children, and named after their dog.
Just a few years later, the three brothers decided to take on the challenge of making their mark as one of the most popular James Street restaurants in Brisbane. As always, they took their time, waited until they were ready and launched Bar Tano on James Street, which has become their most ambitious venture yet.
Regional Italian Food
So, what sets Gemelli apart from other Italian restaurants? Italian food is all about combining the finest ingredients with soulful, thoughtful cooking. The Carney brothers are influenced by the love of food inspired by their Abruzzo roots, but their menu is a nod to the rich heritage of regional Italian cuisines experienced during their travels. Figs wrapped in prosciutto, Aranchini, a slow-cooked oxtail and pork ragu, each dish is carefully crafted using the best ingredients Italy and Australia have to offer.
